Is turbulence actually dangerous?

The honest answer from someone who has flown through a great deal of it.
Q — People are terrified of turbulence. Should they be?

In most cases, no. Turbulence is uncomfortable. It is rarely dangerous — and it is almost never dangerous to the aircraft itself.

Here is what is actually happening. The atmosphere is not a smooth, still body of air. It moves — in different directions, at different speeds, at different altitudes. When an aircraft encounters air that is moving differently than the air around it, you feel it. The aircraft responds. The wings flex. The fuselage absorbs the load. The whole structure is engineered for forces that far exceed anything you will experience on a commercial flight.

People talk about air pockets — as if there is a hole in the sky the aircraft falls into. There is no such thing. What they are describing is turbulence, and it is a normal part of flight. Pilots encounter it routinely. We plan for it, we report it to other crews, and we manage it. It is not an emergency. It is weather.

Q — When does turbulence become something to take seriously?

Severe turbulence can cause injuries — to passengers and crew who are not secured. That is the real risk, and it is the reason the seatbelt sign exists. When the crew turns it on, they are not being cautious for the sake of it. They are telling you something. Keep the belt on.

There are rare cases — clear air turbulence, mountain wave turbulence — that can be sudden and intense. These are taken seriously by flight crews, and modern aircraft and meteorological systems are designed to help us identify and avoid them. But even in those cases, the conversation is about passenger safety and crew positioning, not about whether the aircraft will hold together. It will.

The aircraft knows what it is doing. Fifty years of flying has not changed my view on that.
